Understanding the Noahic Covenant
The Noahic Covenant is an unconditional promise the Most High made to Noah, his family, and every living creature after the flood (Genesis 8:20-9:29).
The Most High Promises
No More Floods: G-d promised never again to destroy all life on earth with a worldwide flood (Genesis 8:21, 9:11).
Stability of Nature: The regular cycles of seasons, day, and night will continue as long as the earth remains (Genesis 8:22).
Unconditional Nature: The promise does not depend on human obedience; it is a permanent guarantee from the Creator of all things (Genesis 9:8-11).
Related Commandments
• Noah and his descendants are commanded to be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth. (Genesis 9:1, 7).
• Humans are allowed to eat animal meat for food; however, eating meat with its lifeblood (raw or undrained blood) is strictly forbidden. For life is in the blood (Genesis 9:4).
• Capital punishment is murder because humans are made in the image of G-d (Genesis 9:6).
The Sign of the Covenant
• G-d placed a rainbow in the clouds as an everlasting sign and visual reminder of His promise to the earth (Genesis 9:12-17).
