Parashah 3: Lekh L’kha (Get yourself out)
Genesis 12:1–17:27
12 Now Adonai said to Avram, “Get yourself out of your country, away from your kinsmen and away from your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make of you a great nation, I will bless you, and I will make your name great; and you are to be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, but I will curse anyone who curses you; and by you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

Hebrews 11:8 By trusting, Avraham obeyed, after being called to go out+ to a place which G-d would give him as a possession; indeed, he went out without knowing where he was going. 9 By trusting, he lived as a temporary resident in the Land of the promise, as if it were not his, staying in tents with Yitz’chak and Ya‘akov, who were to receive what was promised along with him. 10 For he was looking forward to the city with permanent foundations, of which the architect and builder is G-d.
11 By trusting, he received potency to father a child, even when he was past the age for it, as was Sarah herself; because he regarded the One who had made the promise as trustworthy. 12 Therefore this one man, who was virtually dead, fathered descendants
as numerous as the stars in the sky, and as countless as the grains of the sand on the seashore.

Last week’s Sabbath readings for Noach (Noah), ended in Chapter 11 with the genealogy for Shem (Noah’s son). Shem’s sons were Terah, the father of Avram (Abraham), Nahor and Haran. The last two verses of Chapter 11, verses 31 and 32 explain that Terah took his son Avram and Avram’s wife Sarai, as well as Lot, the son of Haran (who had died), out of his homeland, Ur of the Chaldeans, and headed toward Canaan. However, Terah stopped and settled in Haran and never reached Canaan. He lived out the rest of his days short of the final destination.
This week’s Sabbath reading begins with the Most High commanding Avram (Abram) to “go out” to the land the Most High will show him. We know that his destination was to finish what his father started and go to Canaan which became known as the Promised Land. This week we will look at the life and journeys of Abraham in obedience to the Most High.
Shabbat Shalom
